In 2019, I graduated from King’s College London with a BSc in Biomedical Sciences where I mainly focused on physiology, molecular biology, metabolism and neuroscience. During the summer between my second and third year at KCL, I completed a 2-month research project at the Bewick lab at the Diabetes Research Group. I chose this lab because I have always been interested in the fields of diabetes and obesity. Following from my BSc, I graduated in 2020 from University College London with an MRes in Biosciences: Neuroscience. My project based at the Niccoli lab at the Institute of Healthy Ageing focused on investigating the effects metabolic modifiers, such as ketone bodies and lactate, on C9orf72 mediated ALS in Drosophila.

Wanting to further pursue my passion and interest in obesity and diabetes research, I decided to undertake my PhD back at the Bewick lab. Here, I am investigating the adaptations to the gut epithelium in response to obesity and type II diabetes using intestinal organoids. I am also a member of the sustainability committee at the Diabetes Research Group where we are currently trying to obtain the silver award for the LEAF scheme which aims to make labs more sustainable.

I have chosen the DTP because of the diverse: training, networking and symposium opportunities that they offer to their students. It is also great to be part of a community where you can share your research with others!
